This is a very gripping well-told story of how people should treat each other and gives credence to the old adage “Treat people like you would want to be treated”. It starts in the old west with a family moving westward to find a piece of land to call home. The family is Jackson, the dad, Claire the mom, Esme the daughter and Jacob the son. As they find a place to settle Esme finds a new friend but she is not like anyone she has ever met before. As she gets to know her she finds out some terrible and some amazing things. They become quickly best friends. The story is a wonderful mix of spiritual and deeply felt beliefs. It grabs ahold of you and won't let go. The story tells a great tale of how it might have been back in the days when white men and Indians started to co-exist and how they are different and at the same time the same in some ways. They all want peace and to live their lives without trouble. The drama and spiritual lends to this great tale. There is a feeling of danger and hopefulness within the story. When I started reading it I was not sure where it was going to take me, but as I read and came to know more and more about each character, I became more comfortable with them and felt that I really got to know them. Within the saga, there was also a great love story too. You could feel the love that Jackson had for Claire. I want to leave some surprises and I am sure if you read this book there will be plenty. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series from Nathanial.
